Daily Practice - Higher Plus
Grades 8-9 - exam-stretch algebra, geometry and reasoning.
9th April 2004
- 1Histograms3 marks
A histogram has two bars: one 5 units wide with frequency density 0.4, one 20 units wide with density 3. How many values in total?
- 2Surds3 marks
Rationalise the denominator of 99/sqrt(11), giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 3The Nth Term of a Quadratic Sequence2 marks
A quadratic sequence starts 16, 36, 66, 106. Work out the second difference, and the coefficient of n^2.
- 4Direct and Inverse Proportion Depth3 marks
y is directly proportional to x^2. When x = 4, y = 48. Work out the positive value of x when y = 12.
- 5Perpendicular Lines and the equation of a tangent3 marks
The point (5, 12) lies on the circle x^2 + y^2 = 169. Work out the gradient of the tangent to the circle at that point.
