Origins of the Universe
Origins of the universe looks at the scientific Big Bang theory and at religious teachings about the universe being created by God. It considers whether these two kinds of explanation are in conflict or can be held together, and examines the design argument, which claims the order in the universe points to an intelligent creator.

Method
- Learn the key scientific facts of the Big Bang theory and at least one piece of supporting evidence.
- Learn one Christian and one Muslim teaching about the origin of the universe, each with its source.
- Identify the difference between a literal and a non-literal reading of a creation account.
- Learn the basic shape of the design argument and at least one objection to it.
- Practise explaining how a believer might hold both a scientific and a religious account together.
- Practise evaluating whether scientific explanation removes the need for a religious one.
Worked example
Explain what the design argument suggests about the nature of God, using the analogy of a painting and a painter.
- State the design argument's basic idea: the complexity and order found in nature suggest an intelligent cause.
- Use the painting analogy: just as a detailed, carefully composed painting implies a skilled painter, the finely ordered universe implies a powerful, intelligent designer.
- Link this to God's attributes: such a designer would need to be highly intelligent and powerful, fitting the religious idea of God as an omnipotent creator.
- Note the limit of the analogy: it suggests a powerful designer exists but does not by itself prove this designer is the specific God described by any one religion.
- Final answer: the design argument suggests the universe's designer is powerful and intelligent, which is consistent with, though not proof of, belief in God as described in religious teaching.
