The admissions-test landscape was rebuilt twice in three years. Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing closed, taking the BMAT, ENGAA, NSAA and ECAA with it. Oxford then retired its own tests and moved its applicants onto the UAT-UK tests instead. A great deal of preparation advice still online is written for tests that no longer run, so every guide here states what the test is, who sits it, and what it replaced.

• TMUA: Test of Mathematics for University Admission

  Currently sat

  The TMUA is a two-paper, no-calculator, multiple-choice mathematics test sat by applicants to mathematics, computer science, economics and engineering-adjacent courses at a growing list of universities. From 2027 entry it is also the test Oxford mathematics and computer science applicants sit, having replaced Oxford's own MAT.

  Replaces the MAT, the ECAA.

• ESAT: Engineering and Science Admissions Test

  Currently sat

  The ESAT is a modular, no-calculator, multiple-choice science and mathematics test sat by applicants to engineering, natural sciences, physics, chemical engineering and related courses. Most candidates answer Mathematics 1 plus two further modules chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2. From 2027 entry it is also the test Oxford physics and engineering applicants sit, having replaced Oxford's own PAT.

  Replaces the ENGAA, the NSAA, the PAT, the BMSAT.

• TARA: Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions

  Currently sat

  TARA is a two-hour, computer-based reasoning test in three separately timed 40-minute modules: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and an unmarked Writing Task. It asks for no subject knowledge beyond primary-school arithmetic, and from 2027 entry it is the test behind Oxford's PPE, Economics and Management, Human Sciences and Experimental Psychology applications.

  Replaces the TSA.

• MAT: Mathematics Admissions Test

  Replaced

  The MAT is no longer sat. Oxford retired its own admissions tests and mathematics and computer science applicants now take the TMUA instead. This page exists because the MAT question archive is still online, still free, and still one of the best pieces of TMUA preparation available - as long as you know which parts of it transfer and which do not.

• PAT: Physics Aptitude Test

  Replaced

  The PAT is no longer sat. Oxford retired its own admissions tests and physics, physics and philosophy, engineering science and materials science applicants now take the ESAT instead. The PAT archive is still online and still useful, but it trains the wrong pace, and that is the thing to know before you spend a month on it.
