KS1 SATs-Style Maths Paper 2
KS1 Maths Paper 2 is a second complete practice set built the same way as the real Key Stage 1 tests: a short arithmetic-only paper of straightforward calculations, followed by a reasoning paper that puts the same number facts inside short word problems and pictures. The first KS1 maths practice paper focuses on addition and subtraction bonds and simple fractions; this second paper leans on multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes, working out amounts of money, naming 2D and 3D shapes by their properties, and describing quarter, half and full turns. In England the KS1 tests are optional rather than statutory, so schools that still use them treat papers like this as extra practice of the full Year 2 curriculum.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables both ways, as multiplication and as division, because a paper asks how many groups of 5 are in 35 just as often as it asks what 5 x 7 is.
- For time questions, find the minute hand first and count round in 5s from the 12, then read the hour from where the hour hand points, checking whether it is closer to one number or has just passed it.
- For money questions, add the coins in pence first, then write the answer back with the p or the pound sign in the right place.
- For shape questions, count sides and corners for 2D shapes, and faces, edges and vertices for 3D shapes, rather than naming the shape from memory, since an unusual example can look different from the one in the textbook.
- For a turn question, picture a clock face: a quarter turn is like the minute hand moving from 12 to 3, a half turn is like 12 to 6, and a full turn returns to the start.
- For reasoning questions, read the question twice, underline the numbers, and decide which operation is needed before calculating.
- Check the answer fits the question: a time cannot run backwards, a shape cannot have a fraction of a side, and a total made of coins cannot be less than the biggest coin used.
Worked example
A film starts at 20 minutes past 2 and lasts for 45 minutes. What time does it finish?
- Read the start time from the clock: 20 minutes past 2, which can be written 2:20.
- 45 minutes is not a whole number of hours, so split it into an easier jump: first to the next hour, then the rest.
- From 2:20 to 3:00 is 40 minutes (counting on in 5s: 25, 30, 35, 40), so 2:20 plus 40 minutes reaches 3:00.
- That leaves 45 - 40 = 5 minutes still to add on.
- 3:00 plus 5 minutes is 3:05.
- Check by adding the two parts together: 40 minutes + 5 minutes = 45 minutes, which matches the length of the film, so the finish time of 3:05 is correct.

Answer: Because a division question like how many 7s in 28 uses the same fact as the multiplication 4 x 7 = 28, so knowing one gives you the other instantly instead of counting.
