Freya had always loved animals, so when her class visited the wildlife rescue centre near Ambleside, she could hardly contain her excitement. The centre manager, a soft-spoken woman named Dr Ihekwoaba, showed the group into a quiet room where an injured tawny owl was recovering. She explained that the owl had been found with a damaged wing after colliding with a fast moving car. For weeks, the staff had fed it carefully and monitored its progress, refusing to lose hope even when the bird barely moved. Slowly, the owl began to regain its strength, first flexing its wing and then hopping between perches. When Dr Ihekwoaba announced that the owl was finally ready to be released, the pupils could hardly believe how wonderful the news was. On the day of the release, Freya watched as the box was opened and the owl soared into the sky, circling once before disappearing over the treetops. Dr Ihekwoaba explained that without the centre's work, injuries like this would almost always prove fatal. As the coach pulled away, Freya decided that she wanted to devote her life to helping animals like this owl.

Volunteers baked flapjacks, decorated cupcakes and even built a small stall from old wooden pallets. On the day itself, queues formed before the gates had even opened, and by lunchtime almost every item had sold out. The event raised an astonishing eight hundred pounds, far beyond what anyone had dared to hope. When the new equipment finally arrived a month later, the head teacher thanked everyone whose effort had helped to bring the playground back to life.
