Revision notes: Combined and Hidden Shapes

Combined and Hidden Shapes covers two related non-verbal reasoning skills: working out the outline made when two given shapes are joined edge to edge, and spotting a smaller shape hidden within the lines of a larger figure. Both test careful attention to exact edge lengths and angles rather than a rough impression of the shape.

  1. For combining shapes, find the marked edge on each shape and check the two edges are the same length before joining them.
  2. Join the two shapes so the marked edges lie exactly on top of each other, then erase that shared edge to leave one single outline.
  3. Check whether any remaining edges become collinear, forming one straight line, once joined; merge them into a single edge rather than leaving an extra corner.
  4. For hidden shapes, trace only along lines that are already drawn in the figure; never add, remove or bend a line to make a shape fit.
  5. Compare the exact side lengths and angles of each candidate shape against the lines you can trace, not just its rough outline.
  6. Rule out any option that needs an extra line, a missing line, or a line of the wrong length to complete it.
Worked example. Shape 1 is a rectangle 5cm wide and 3cm tall. Shape 2 is a right-angled triangle with a base of 5cm and a height of 2cm, right angle at the bottom-left corner. The triangle's 5cm base (the marked edge) is joined exactly along the top edge of the rectangle, with the triangle pointing up. What shape is formed, and what is its total height?
  1. The marked edges are the same length, both 5cm, so they join edge to edge without a gap or overhang.
  2. The rectangle's top edge is erased where the triangle's base sits. Because the triangle's right angle is at the bottom-left, its vertical leg lines up exactly with the rectangle's left edge, so these two edges merge into one straight line; only the triangle's sloped hypotenuse becomes a new edge in the outline.
  3. The rectangle contributes a height of 3cm on the right-hand side, and the triangle's vertical leg extends the left-hand side up by a further 2cm, giving the combined left side a height of 5cm.
Answer: a quadrilateral (a right trapezoid) with vertical sides of 5cm (left) and 3cm (right), joined by a 5cm base and a sloped top edge; total height 3 + 2 = 5cm.
