Every Tuesday after school, Ben stayed behind for robotics club. He felt hopeful that his team's robot would finally work, because they had practised for weeks. Mrs Adeyemi, the club leader, was famously patient; she never grew furious, even when a robot toppled over during testing. Today was the regional final, and the hall was crowded with pupils from other schools. Ben's robot, nicknamed Rusty, looked ancient compared to the sleek machines around it, but it had never let the team down. His friend Priya was cautious about the wobbly wheels, so she checked every bolt carefully before the contest began. When the whistle blew, Rusty trundled forward and lifted the small crate with surprising strength. The crowd was astonished, and even the judges looked delighted. Ben's rival, a boy named Connor, had built a robot that looked brilliant but broke down after ten seconds; he seemed miserable as he carried it off the stage. Priya gave Ben a generous, warm smile and said the team's careful preparation had paid off. By the end of the afternoon, Rusty had won first prize, and the exhausted but cheerful team carried their trophy home.
