[1] In the small village of Coupvray, some twenty miles east of Paris, a leatherworker named Simon-Rene Braille kept a workshop crowded with awls, knives and strips of hide. It was here, one afternoon in 1812, that his three-year-old son Louis picked up a sharp awl and attempted to imitate his father's careful stitching. The tool slipped, piercing the boy's eye. Despite the desperate efforts of a local doctor, infection spread from the wounded eye to the other, and by the time Louis was five years old he was completely and permanently blind.
[2] In the France of the 1810s, a blind child from a poor rural family had little reason to expect an education at all, let alone a place at school. Louis was fortunate: the village priest recognised his sharp intelligence and persuaded the local schoolmaster to let him attend ordinary lessons, listening rather than reading. At the age of ten, that same intelligence won him a scholarship to the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, one of the very few schools in the world for blind pupils. There, Louis discovered just how narrow his new world still was. The library held only a handful of books, each printed with enormous embossed Roman letters that pupils traced slowly with their fingertips. A single volume could weigh several kilograms and take months to produce, so most lessons still had to be learned entirely by ear and by memory.
[3] Everything changed in 1821, when a retired army officer named Charles Barbier visited the school. Barbier had invented a code of raised dots, nicknamed night writing, which allowed soldiers to pass silent messages to one another in the dark without lighting a lamp that might reveal their position to the enemy. Twelve-year-old Louis was captivated, but he quickly spotted a flaw: Barbier's dot patterns were too large to sense in a single touch, forcing the reader to slide a finger back and forth across each symbol. Over the next four years, working late into the night in the school dormitory, Louis experimented obsessively, shrinking and rearranging the dots until he arrived at a compact cell of just six dots, arranged in two columns of three, small enough to be felt instantly beneath one fingertip.
[4] By 1824, at only fifteen years old, Louis had a working alphabet built from his six-dot cells, and he spent the following years extending it to cover punctuation, numbers and even musical notation. He formally published his system in 1829, in a slim book intended for use by the blind. His fellow pupils adopted it almost overnight, scribbling secret notes to one another beneath their desks. The school's sighted staff were far more cautious. Most inspectors and teachers could not read dots at all, and were reluctant to approve a system they could not check for themselves, so for years the Institute continued to insist on the old embossed Roman letters, even though almost none of the blind pupils found them practical to use.
[5] Louis remained at the Institute after finishing his own studies, first as a teaching assistant and later as a full professor, all the while continuing to refine his system in his spare time. He was also a gifted musician, playing the cello and the organ at churches across Paris despite being unable to see a single note of the sheet music before him. The damp, poorly heated buildings of the Institute took a heavy toll on his health, however, and Louis contracted tuberculosis. He died in 1852, at the age of just forty-three, two years before the Institute officially adopted his system as its standard method of teaching.
[6] More than a century and a half later, Braille's six simple dots are read in over one hundred languages, from mathematics classrooms to sheet music, medicine packaging to lift buttons and banknotes. It is a striking thought that the entire system began not in a government office or a university laboratory, but in the mind of a determined teenager, quietly rearranging dots by candlelight until the whole alphabet fitted beneath a single fingertip.
