Potassium: reacts violently with cold water, bursting into flame. (Too dangerous to test with steam or dilute acid.)
Magnesium: very little reaction with cold water; reacts vigorously with steam, glowing brightly white; reacts steadily with dilute hydrochloric acid, fizzing steadily.
Zinc: no reaction with cold water; reacts slowly with steam, glowing faintly; reacts slowly with dilute hydrochloric acid, fizzing gently.
Copper: no reaction with cold water, steam or dilute hydrochloric acid. However, when a strip of copper is placed into a solution of gold(III) chloride, a layer of solid gold forms on the copper.
Gold: no reaction with cold water, steam, dilute hydrochloric acid, or any common acid.
