Religion, Science and Ideology as Competing Belief Systems

Sociologists compare religion, science and ideology as different types of belief system, each claiming to explain the world but resting on very different foundations. Horton distinguishes closed belief systems, such as religion, which explain away contradictory evidence using built-in 'get-out clauses' (for example attributing an unanswered prayer to God's will rather than treating it as disproof), from open belief systems, such as science, which actively invite challenge and revision. Popper argues science progresses through falsificationism: a genuinely scientific claim must be testable and open to being proven wrong, whereas religious claims typically cannot be falsified, so, on Popper's criterion, they fall outside science. Kuhn complicates the picture of science as purely open, arguing that scientists normally work within a shared paradigm and treat its core assumptions as beyond question, only overturning it in rare 'scientific revolutions', meaning science too can behave in a relatively closed way most of the time. Ideology, in the Marxist sense, is a belief system that serves the interests of a dominant group by presenting a particular, partial view of the world as universal common sense, and secular ideologies (political or environmental) can perform some of the same integrating and legitimating functions that religion once did.

Method

  1. Set out the three-way comparison clearly before analysing any single one: religion, science and ideology all claim to explain reality, but differ in how they treat challenges to their claims.
  2. Define Horton's open/closed distinction precisely: a closed system uses built-in explanations to absorb any evidence that would otherwise disprove it, while an open system treats disconfirming evidence as a reason to revise or reject a claim.
  3. Use Popper's falsificationism as the criterion for genuine science: a scientific statement must, in principle, be capable of being shown false by evidence; unfalsifiable claims (many religious claims) are not scientific by this standard, though this does not automatically make them untrue.
  4. Bring in Kuhn as a direct qualification of Popper: normal science operates within an accepted paradigm that researchers rarely question, so science in practice can be closed to challenge for long periods, only shifting through a paradigm-shifting revolution (e.g. Copernican astronomy replacing an Earth-centred model).
  5. Explain the Marxist concept of ideology as a belief system that legitimates a dominant group's interests by presenting them as neutral, natural or in everyone's interest, and compare this function to religion's traditional role of legitimating existing social arrangements.
  6. Give a modern secular example (e.g. an all-encompassing political ideology, or an intensely held environmental worldview) that performs religion-like functions, such as offering meaning, moral certainty and a community of believers, to support the argument that these are not exclusively religious functions.
  7. If the item contrasts religion with science or a secular worldview, use the item's specific example to structure the answer rather than writing a generic account of all three belief systems.
  8. For an evaluative answer, weigh whether science truly is more 'open' than religion in practice (using Kuhn) against the classical view that science and religion are fundamentally different types of knowledge (using Popper).

Worked example

Item A: A community's traditional belief is that a poor harvest is caused by the gods' displeasure, and when a ritual to appease the gods is followed by a good harvest the following year, this is taken as proof the ritual worked; when it is followed by another poor harvest, this is explained as the ritual being performed incorrectly rather than the belief being wrong. Applying material from Item A and your knowledge, analyse two features of religion as a closed belief system. (10 marks)

  1. Identify the item's key feature: whatever the outcome (good or poor harvest), the belief survives because a different explanation is available for each case.
  2. Feature 1: use Horton's concept of a 'get-out clause' directly, naming the item's example (the ritual was 'performed incorrectly') as exactly this kind of built-in explanation that absorbs disconfirming evidence rather than treating it as disproof.
  3. Develop feature 1: explain that because the belief can never, even in principle, be shown false, it meets Popper's definition of an unfalsifiable claim, which is why Popper argues it falls outside genuine science.
  4. Feature 2: note that the belief is treated as beyond question by the community, matching Horton's point that closed systems do not encourage members to test or doubt the system's core assumptions.
  5. Contrast briefly with an open system: a scientific claim about harvests (e.g. a claim about soil nutrients) would specify in advance what evidence would disprove it, and revise the claim if that evidence appeared, which the item's belief does not do.
  6. Check that both features are drawn from the item's specific detail and named using Horton and Popper rather than a generic 'religion resists change' statement.
