The Role of the Entrepreneur and Generating Business Ideas
An entrepreneur is a person who takes on the financial risk of starting and running a new business venture, in the hope of making a profit.

Method
- Learn the definition of an entrepreneur and the qualities examiners commonly reward: determination, willingness to take risks, flexibility or adaptability, creativity, and the ability to spot and exploit opportunities.
- Learn the main sources of new business ideas: personal skills or interests, a gap spotted in the market, adapting or improving an existing product, buying a franchise, and formal market research.
- Learn that not every entrepreneurial quality suits every business, so questions may ask which quality matters most for a specific case, for example flexibility mattering more in a fast-changing market.
- For state or identify questions, name the quality or idea source directly from the case with no explanation.
- For explain questions, name the quality and link it to a specific consequence for the entrepreneur's chance of success in that case.
- For analyse or evaluate questions on which quality matters most, build reasoning that connects the quality to the specific challenge the entrepreneur in the case faces, then reach a supported judgement.
Worked example
Tomasz is launching a smartphone app in a market where three larger competitors already exist, and customer preferences for app features change quickly. Explain why flexibility is likely to be an important quality for Tomasz as an entrepreneur.
- Identify the market condition described: customer preferences for app features change quickly, and Tomasz already faces three larger competitors.
- Identify what flexibility means for an entrepreneur: being willing and able to change plans, features or strategy quickly in response to new information.
- Link flexibility to Tomasz's situation: in a fast-changing market, an app that does not adapt its features will quickly fall behind both changing customer tastes and competitor updates.
- Write the explained conclusion: flexibility is important for Tomasz because it would let him update his app's features quickly as customer preferences shift, helping him compete against three larger, better-resourced rivals who might otherwise out-innovate him.
