Promotion

Promotion covers the methods a business uses to communicate with, inform and persuade customers to buy, split into above the line promotion, paid advertising through mass media such as TV and print, and below the line promotion, tools such as sales promotions, sponsorship and digital marketing.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Learn the distinction between above the line promotion (paid advertising via mass media) and below the line promotion (other tools, more targeted or direct, such as sales promotions, PR, sponsorship and digital).
  2. Learn each below the line tool and a scenario it fits: sales promotions boost short-term sales or clear stock but can cheapen a brand if overused; sponsorship builds brand awareness through association with an event or team; public relations manages reputation but the business has less control over the message; digital promotion reaches customers precisely and can be tracked.
  3. Learn how the appropriate promotional method depends on the target market, the product, the budget and the objective, such as building long-term brand image against boosting short-term sales.
  4. For 'explain' questions, name the method plus the linked benefit or drawback tied to the scenario given.
  5. For 'evaluate' or 'recommend' questions, weigh at least two methods against the business's target market, budget and objective in the case, then reach a supported judgement naming the business.
  6. Learn that promotion must be consistent with the rest of the marketing mix, e.g. a premium product needs promotion that reinforces a premium image, not heavy discount-based sales promotions.

Worked example

Solstice Skincare is a new, premium skincare brand aimed at customers aged 20-35 who are highly active on Instagram and TikTok. It has a modest marketing budget of 15,000 pounds for its launch. Recommend one promotional method Solstice Skincare should prioritise, with a reason based on its target market and budget.

  1. Identify the target market's characteristics: young adults who are highly active on specific social media platforms.
  2. Identify the budget constraint: 15,000 pounds is modest compared with mass-media above the line advertising, such as national TV, which is typically far more expensive and less targeted at a niche age group.
  3. Consider digital promotion, such as influencer marketing or targeted social media adverts on Instagram and TikTok, as it reaches the specific target age group directly on the platforms they already use.
  4. Consider cost-effectiveness: digital and influencer promotion can often be run on a smaller budget than mass-media advertising, and results such as clicks and engagement can be tracked, letting Solstice Skincare adjust spending quickly.
  5. Recommend digital or influencer promotion on Instagram and TikTok, because it directly matches Solstice Skincare's target market's media habits and fits its modest launch budget more efficiently than mass-media advertising.
