Ratio Sharing when the Difference is Given

Ratio sharing when the difference is given covers sharing an amount between two or more people using a ratio, when the question states how much more one share is than another rather than stating the total. Pupils must first find the value of one 'part' of the ratio from that difference, which is a common trap on 11+ papers because the standard sharing method (dividing a known total by the number of parts) does not directly apply.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Write down the ratio and find how many parts separate the two shares by subtracting the smaller ratio number from the larger.
  2. Divide the given difference by this number of parts to find the value of one part.
  3. Multiply the value of one part by each number in the ratio to find every person's share.
  4. Add the shares together afterwards if the question also asks for the total amount.
  5. Check your answer by subtracting the two shares you found; the result should match the difference given in the question.
  6. In a three-part ratio, re-read the question carefully to see exactly which two shares the stated difference is between, since it may not be the two extreme values.

Worked example

Ravi and Sam share some sweets in the ratio 2 : 5. Sam receives 18 more sweets than Ravi. How many sweets does each person receive?

  1. Find the number of parts between them: 5 - 2 = 3 parts.
  2. Divide the difference by the number of parts to find the value of one part: 18 / 3 = 6.
  3. Find Ravi's share: 2 x 6 = 12.
  4. Find Sam's share: 5 x 6 = 30.
  5. Check: 30 - 12 = 18, which matches the difference given in the question.

Answer: The difference between the ratio numbers shows how many equal parts separate the two shares, so dividing the given difference by that number of parts finds the value of one part; dividing by the sum would instead be correct if you had been given the total of the shares, not the difference.
