Two-Way Tables and Venn Diagram Reasoning

A two-way table organises data by two categories at once, such as year group and favourite subject, in rows and columns with row and column totals. A Venn diagram shows how groups (sets) overlap using labelled circles inside a rectangle. 11+ papers test reading, completing and reasoning about missing values in both, often combined with basic probability.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. In a two-way table, check that every row sums to its row total and every column sums to its column total; use this to find any missing value by subtraction.
  2. Read the question carefully to identify exactly which row, column or single cell is being asked about.
  3. In a Venn diagram, the overlapping region shows items in both sets; the region outside both circles but inside the rectangle shows items in neither.
  4. To find a missing value in a Venn diagram, use the total number of items and any given regions, subtracting known regions from the total step by step.
  5. For 'only' questions, such as 'how many like tennis only', make sure the overlap region has already been subtracted so it is not double-counted.
  6. Double-check a completed table or diagram by confirming its rows, columns and overall total all sum correctly.

Worked example

A two-way table shows how 50 pupils travel to school. There are 24 boys and 26 girls in total. 18 boys walk to school and 6 boys cycle. 14 girls walk to school. Work out how many girls cycle to school.

  1. Note the total number of girls is 26.
  2. Note the number of girls who walk is 14.
  3. Since each girl either walks or cycles, subtract: 26 - 14 = 12.
  4. Girls who cycle to school = 12. Check the boys: 18 + 6 = 24, which matches the given total of 24 boys.
