Place Value and Ordering: Practice Set 2 gives a fresh set of questions on reading, comparing, ordering and rounding whole numbers and decimals, and on placing negative numbers in order, the same skills tested in the first Place Value and Ordering set. 11+ papers return to this skill repeatedly because every later topic, from the four operations to percentages, depends on being able to read a number's value correctly first.
Method
- Identify the place-value columns of the number, including tenths and hundredths after the decimal point, before making any comparison or rounding decision.
- To compare or order numbers, line them up by place value, padding decimals with trailing zeros, then compare digits from the most significant column first.
- To round to a given place, look at the digit immediately to the right of the rounding place: 5 or more rounds up, below 5 rounds down or stays the same.
- When ordering negative numbers, remember that a more negative number is smaller, so -9 is less than -2.
- For 'find the number' puzzles built from digit clues, fill in the digits given directly first, then use the remaining clues to work out the rest.
- Check your final order or rounded value makes sense against the size of the original numbers before moving on.
Worked example
Order these numbers from largest to smallest: 2.3, 2.03, 2.31, 2.309
- Write every number to three decimal places by padding with zeros: 2.300, 2.030, 2.310, 2.309.
- All four numbers have the same units digit, 2, so compare the tenths digit next: 2.030 has 0 tenths, less than the 3 tenths in the other three, so 2.03 is the smallest.
- Among 2.300, 2.310 and 2.309, compare the hundredths digit: 2.310 has 1 hundredth, larger than the 0 hundredths in the others, so 2.31 is the largest of the three.
- Compare 2.300 and 2.309 using the thousandths digit: 2.309 has 9 thousandths against 0, so 2.309 is larger than 2.3.
- Putting this together from largest to smallest gives 2.31, 2.309, 2.3, 2.03.
