Measures, Units and Time: Practice Set 3 is a practice set on converting between metric units of length, mass and capacity, and solving time problems including duration, timetables and the 24-hour clock, both frequently tested strands on 11+ maths papers.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Learn the standard metric conversions by heart: 1000g = 1kg, 1000ml = 1 litre, 1000m = 1km, 100cm = 1m, so conversions can be done by moving the decimal point.
- When converting between units, decide whether the new unit is smaller or larger than the original, since converting to a smaller unit means multiplying and converting to a larger unit means dividing.
- For time durations that cross an hour boundary, split the calculation into minutes to the next hour plus remaining minutes, rather than subtracting the raw clock times directly.
- Convert 12-hour clock times to the 24-hour clock, adding 12 to any pm hour other than 12 pm, before comparing or calculating with timetable data.
- When reading a timetable, check whether the times given are departure times or arrival times, since a journey's duration is the difference between the two.
- Give final answers in the unit the question asks for, converting back at the end if you worked in a different unit partway through.
Worked example
A train timetable shows a train departs at 13:45 and arrives at 15:20. A second, faster train covers the same journey in 1 hour 20 minutes less. If the second train also departs at 13:45, at what time does it arrive?
- Find the journey time of the first train, from 13:45 to 15:20.
- Break this into stages: from 13:45 to 14:45 is 1 hour, then from 14:45 to 15:20 is 35 minutes, so the total is 1 hour 35 minutes.
- Find the second train's journey time by subtracting 1 hour 20 minutes from 1 hour 35 minutes: 1 hour 35 minutes - 1 hour 20 minutes = 15 minutes.
- Add the second train's journey time to its departure time: 13:45 plus 15 minutes.
- Final answer: the second train arrives at 14:00.
