Mental Arithmetic Paper 7

Mental Arithmetic Paper 7 is the seventh in this series of timed mental arithmetic practice papers, again combining the four operations, fractions, percentages and simple conversions of time and money into short, quick-fire questions with no calculator allowed, matching the pace and style of the mental maths sections in GL Assessment and CEM/CSSE 11+ tests.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Recognise that many mental arithmetic questions on this paper combine two operations in one sentence, so plan both steps before you calculate either one.
  2. Carry out the first operation completely and hold only its result in your head, rather than trying to do both operations at once.
  3. Re-read the second instruction carefully before applying it to your first result, since the second step usually determines the final answer.
  4. Use quick mental shortcuts wherever the numbers allow, such as recognising a near-multiple of ten or a familiar times-table fact.
  5. Say your working through in your head in the same order the question gave it, to avoid accidentally reversing the two steps.
  6. Move on the moment you have an answer; checking a mental arithmetic answer typically costs more time than it is worth on this kind of paper.

Worked example

A mental arithmetic question, read aloud once: 'Divide 90 by 6, then add 17. What is your final answer?'

  1. Start with the division: 90 / 6.
  2. Recall that 6 x 15 = 90, so 90 / 6 = 15.
  3. Now add 17 to the result: 15 + 17.
  4. 15 + 17 = 32.
  5. The final answer is 32.
