GL-Style Mixed Mock 4: Maths and Verbal Reasoning
GL-Style Mixed Mock 4 is a full-length two-section 11+ practice paper combining decimal, fraction, percentage and money maths questions with a verbal reasoning section built around alphabet-position number codes and letters-for-numbers puzzles. Both the maths content and this verbal reasoning sub-set lean on precise, methodical working rather than quick pattern-spotting, rewarding pupils who write each step down.
Method
- Before the timed section starts, jot the alphabet down the side of your paper with the numbers 1 to 26 next to each letter, so you are not counting on your fingers under time pressure once the code questions begin.
- In the maths section, convert between fractions, decimals and percentages on paper rather than in your head; a no-calculator paper rewards a clear written method you can check, over a mental shortcut you cannot.
- For a letters-for-numbers question, write the key out exactly as given before you calculate anything, then work out the requested value and match it back to the key rather than guessing which letter looks right.
- For an alphabet-position code, establish the rule from the worked example first (how many places each letter moves, and in which direction), then apply it one letter at a time rather than trying to shift the whole word at once.
- This mock's verbal reasoning section takes slightly longer per question than a mixed-type section because codes involve several small steps, so budget close to a full minute per code or key question rather than the usual 45 seconds.
- Check a completed code by reversing your own working on one letter, since a single slipped letter early in a code throws off every letter after it.
- In the final two minutes of each section, fill in a best guess for every unanswered question rather than leaving any blank.
Worked example
Verbal reasoning question: If the code for CABIN is JHIPU (each letter moved 7 places forward in the alphabet), what is the code for DRAGON using the same rule?
- Establish the coding rule from the example: each letter in CABIN moves 7 places forward to give JHIPU (C to J, A to H, B to I, I to P, N to U).
- Apply the same rule to the first letter of DRAGON: D moves 7 places forward to K.
- Continue letter by letter: R moves to Y, A moves to H, G moves to N, O moves to V, N moves to U.
- Combine the coded letters in order: K, Y, H, N, V, U.
- Final answer: the code for DRAGON is KYHNVU.
