Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock 2
The Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock 2 gives further practice at the multiple-choice maths format used by the Sutton grammar schools' consortium test, drawing on the Key Stage 2 curriculum with quick arithmetic mixed with multi-step reasoning problems on ratio, proportion, measures and money. Questions are usually presented with multiple-choice answer options and a separate answer sheet, with this set focusing on ratio, proportion and rate problems.

Method
- Before calculating, decide whether a question is a ratio, a proportion (scaling) or a rate (such as speed or price per item) problem, since each has a slightly different method.
- For ratio-sharing questions, find the total number of parts first, then the value of one part, before working out each share.
- For proportion (scaling) questions, find the value for one unit first (one person, one item, one hour) then multiply up or down to the amount asked for.
- Read the four answer options before finalising your method on multiple-choice questions, since a distractor option often matches a common error, such as forgetting to find the value of one part first.
- Keep your units consistent throughout a calculation (for example, convert everything to minutes, or everything to pence, before you start), since mixed units are a common source of multiple-choice traps.
- Move on quickly once you have a confident, checked answer; multiple-choice ratio and proportion questions are usually worth the same single mark as any other question on the paper.
Worked example
Paint is mixed in the ratio 2:3, blue to white, to make a particular shade of grey. If a tin uses 500 ml of blue paint, how much white paint is needed to keep the same ratio? (a) 500ml (b) 650ml (c) 750ml (d) 800ml
- Identify the ratio: blue to white is 2:3.
- Find the value of 1 part: 500 ml of blue represents 2 parts, so 1 part = 500 divided by 2 = 250 ml.
- Find the amount of white paint (3 parts): 250 x 3.
- Calculate: 250 x 3 = 750 ml.
- Check against the options: 750ml matches option (c).
- Final answer: (c) 750ml.
