GL-Style Mixed Mock 7: Maths and English
GL-Style Mixed Mock 7 is a combined maths-and-English 11+ sitting in which whichever section comes second demands switching skill and pace with no break in between. This mock focuses on the time, timetables and duration questions that turn up in the maths half of such a sitting, since time arithmetic uses 60 minutes to an hour and 24 hours to a day rather than the base-10 place value used elsewhere on the paper.
Method
- Learn to convert fluently between the 12-hour clock (with am and pm) and the 24-hour clock, since GL timetables are usually printed using the 24-hour clock.
- When finding a duration, work out the time to the next whole hour first, then add on the remaining hours and minutes separately, rather than subtracting the digits as though time were an ordinary decimal number.
- Watch for a journey that crosses an hour boundary (for example, from 08:47 to 10:15) and deal with the minutes and hours in separate steps, carrying over correctly, rather than subtracting the minute digits directly.
- On a timetable with several columns of times, find the correct column for the named service, day or stop before reading down it, since misreading the column is a common error.
- For 'how much earlier or later' questions, work out both times or both durations fully first, and only compare them at the very last step.
- When you move into this section from a different question type, reread the timetable or clock question carefully rather than skimming it, since a single misread digit changes every later answer.
- Keep your pace steady: a timetable question can look intimidating because of how many numbers are printed on the page, but each individual calculation inside it is usually short.
Worked example
A train timetable shows a train leaving Ashcombe at 08:47 and arriving in Redbrook at 10:15. The same train leaves Redbrook at 10:30 and arrives in Filton at 11:05. How long, in total, is the passenger travelling, not counting the time waiting at Redbrook?
- Find the duration of the first leg, from 08:47 to 10:15: from 08:47 to 09:00 is 13 minutes, and from 09:00 to 10:15 is a further 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Add these together: 13 minutes + 1 hour 15 minutes = 1 hour 28 minutes for the first leg.
- Find the duration of the second leg, from 10:30 to 11:05: this is 35 minutes.
- Add the two legs together: 1 hour 28 minutes + 35 minutes.
- 28 + 35 = 63 minutes, which is 1 hour 3 minutes, so the total becomes 1 hour + 1 hour 3 minutes = 2 hours 3 minutes.
- Final answer: the passenger is travelling for 2 hours 3 minutes in total.
