CSSE-Style Maths Mock (Essex)
The CSSE-Style Maths Mock (Essex) is modelled on the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex's 11+ Maths paper, sat by Year 5 pupils applying to Essex's selective and grammar schools such as Colchester Royal Grammar School. It covers the full Key Stage 2 curriculum, mixing straightforward calculations with multi-step word problems that test reasoning as well as calculation.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before the test, find out from your target school's admissions page how long the current CSSE maths paper lasts and how many questions or marks it carries, since this changes year to year and drives your pacing.
- Skim the whole paper first if you are allowed to, so you know roughly how the harder, multi-step questions are spread through it rather than assuming difficulty rises steadily.
- For each question, identify what operation or method it needs before picking up your pencil: read the whole question, underline the numbers and the units, and decide your method in one go rather than guessing halfway through.
- Show your working in the space provided even on questions that only need a final answer, since a clear method makes it far quicker to spot and fix your own arithmetic slip.
- If a question is not falling into place within a minute or so, mark it and move on: a hard multi-step problem is worth the same as a simple one, and leaving three easy questions unanswered to finish one hard one is a losing trade.
- Keep a running check on units and on whether the question wants a whole number, a decimal or a fraction in the final answer, since a right method with the wrong form of answer often loses the mark.
- In the last few minutes, return to any question you marked to revisit, and re-read (not just re-calculate) any question where your answer looks like an unlikely real-world number, such as a person's age of 340.
Worked example
A school trip costs 8.50 pounds per pupil for the coach and 6.75 pounds per pupil for entry to a museum. A class of 27 pupils is going on the trip, and the school has a grant of 150 pounds to reduce the total cost. What is the total amount the parents need to pay altogether, after the grant is taken off?
- Find the cost per pupil: 8.50 + 6.75 = 15.25 pounds per pupil.
- Find the total cost for the whole class: 15.25 x 27. Break this down: 15 x 27 = 405, and 0.25 x 27 = 6.75, so 15.25 x 27 = 405 + 6.75 = 411.75 pounds.
- Subtract the grant from the total cost: 411.75 - 150 = 261.75 pounds.
- Check the answer is sensible: 261.75 pounds for 27 pupils is about 9.70 pounds each after the grant, which is a realistic school-trip contribution.
- Final answer: the parents need to pay 261.75 pounds altogether.
