GL-Style Mixed Mock 12: Maths and English

GL-Style Mixed Mock 12 pairs maths with English in one timed sitting and covers the maths content pupils most often run out of time for: perimeter, area and volume of compound shapes, where a diagram must first be split into simpler parts before any calculating can begin. As the final mock in this series, it suits a full timed attempt under strict exam conditions, comparing how many minutes each section actually took against the real test's limits.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. For a compound, L-shaped or irregular shape, split it into two or more rectangles, or a rectangle and a triangle, before calculating anything, marking each part on the diagram if you are allowed to write on it.
  2. If a side length is missing from a compound shape, use the fact that the shape's opposite outer edges must add up to the same total length, rather than guessing the missing value.
  3. For area, calculate each part separately, length x width for a rectangle, half x base x height for a triangle, then add the parts together; for perimeter, add every outer edge, remembering that internal split-lines are not part of the perimeter.
  4. For the volume of a cuboid, multiply length x width x height in a single calculation, keeping every dimension in the same unit before you multiply.
  5. Always give area in square units, such as cm squared or m squared, and volume in cubed units, such as cm cubed or m cubed, since a numerically correct answer with the wrong type of unit can lose the mark.
  6. Since this is the last mock in this run, use it as a full timed run-through under strict exam conditions, and note afterwards exactly how many minutes you spent on each section, comparing it with your target time before the real test.
  7. If you run out of time on the shape questions specifically during this timed run-through, treat that as useful information: it tells you to drill perimeter, area and volume questions on their own before your next full mock, rather than revising more generally.

Worked example

An L-shaped garden is made from a large rectangle 12 metres by 8 metres, with a smaller rectangular corner of 5 metres by 3 metres cut out of it. Work out the area of the remaining L-shaped garden.

  1. Find the area of the large rectangle before any part is removed: 12 x 8.
  2. Calculate: 12 x 8 = 96 square metres.
  3. Find the area of the smaller rectangle that has been cut out: 5 x 3.
  4. Calculate: 5 x 3 = 15 square metres.
  5. Subtract the cut-out area from the large rectangle's area: 96 - 15 = 81.
  6. Final answer: the area of the L-shaped garden is 81 square metres.
