Wiltshire-Style Maths and Reasoning Mock
The Wiltshire-Style Maths and Reasoning Mock is a two-section timed 11+ practice test using the same no-calculator maths plus reasoning model as the Devon-style mock: 25 minutes of multiple-choice arithmetic, fractions, measures and shape in Section 1, and 20 minutes of mixed number and letter reasoning in Section 2. Some counties, including Wiltshire, use grammar-school consortium arrangements rather than a single fixed test, so timings and section counts can differ between schools.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before starting, note the total time and question count for each section so you know your target pace (roughly one minute per maths question, under a minute per reasoning question).
- Work Section 1 in order but do not get stuck: if a question needs more than about 90 seconds, ring it, guess your best option, and come back only if time remains.
- Show working for every calculation in the margin, even in a multiple-choice paper - it is the fastest way to catch a slip before you commit to an answer.
- In Section 2, look for the operation hidden inside a reasoning question (a missing number equation is still an equation) rather than treating every reasoning item as a puzzle with no method.
- For 'balance the equation' or missing-number questions, work out what the missing value must be first, then match it to the closest given option rather than testing every option in turn.
- With two minutes left in a section, check that every question has an answer selected; an educated guess beats a blank box.
- When marking the mock afterwards, time yourself doing the questions you got wrong under no pressure - if you get them right untimed, the issue is speed, not understanding.
Worked example
In the equation 6 x ? - 5 = 37, what number replaces the question mark?
- Undo the last operation first: add 5 to both sides, so 6 x ? = 37 + 5.
- Work out the right-hand side: 37 + 5 = 42, so 6 x ? = 42.
- Undo the multiplication: divide both sides by 6, so ? = 42 / 6.
- Work out the division: 42 / 6 = 7.
- Check by substituting back: 6 x 7 - 5 = 42 - 5 = 37, which matches the original equation, so the answer is 7.

Q6A shop sells 2,468 items in January and 3,551 in February. Estimate the two-month total by rounding each figure to the nearest thousand, then state how far the estimate is from the true total.Show answer
Answer: 2,468 rounds to 2,000 and 3,551 rounds to 4,000, giving an estimate of 6,000. The true total is 6,019, so the estimate is 19 too low.
Q7What is the perimeter of a square with an area of 49 cm squared?Show answer
Answer: 28 cm (the side length is the square root of 49, which is 7 cm, so the perimeter is 4 x 7 = 28 cm)
