Method
- Skim each question's format first (a series, a code, a pair of words, a statement) before reading the detail, since the format tells you immediately which of the four skills in this set to apply.
- Budget roughly 40 to 45 seconds per question on your first pass through the set; if a question is not falling into place within that time, mark your best guess and move on rather than losing time you need elsewhere.
- For the number code question in this set, apply the two steps of the rule in the exact order given, since applying them in the wrong order produces a different, incorrect code.
- For the logic deduction question, write out any grid or chain on scrap paper as you read the statements, rather than trying to keep every fact in your head at once.
- Keep a mental note of which question types in this set you find slowest, and on a second pass through anything you skipped, attempt those types first while time remains.
- Before handing in, check your answers line up with the correct question numbers, since mixed sets change format often and a transcription slip is the most common way to lose a mark that had nothing to do with reasoning.
Worked example
In this code, each letter's alphabet position is tripled, then 1 is added. If the code for CAT is 10-4-61, what is the code for DOG, using the same rule?
- Check the rule against CAT: C is the 3rd letter, 3x3+1=10; A is the 1st letter, 1x3+1=4; T is the 20th letter, 20x3+1=61, matching the given code.
- Confirm the rule is triple the alphabet position, then add 1.
- Apply the rule to DOG: D is the 4th letter, 4x3+1=13; O is the 15th letter, 15x3+1=46; G is the 7th letter, 7x3+1=22.
- Write the numbers in order: 13, 46, 22.
- Final answer: 13-46-22.
