Move a Letter: Practice Set 2
Move a Letter (Practice Set 2) continues the same 11+ verbal reasoning question type as the first set: two words are given in brackets, and pupils must find the single letter that can move from the end of the first word to the start of the second word so that both results are still correctly spelled, real words. This second set uses fresh word pairs so pupils can practise the skill again from scratch, without simply remembering answers from the first set. It remains a common feature of GL Assessment-style 11+ verbal reasoning papers.
Method
- Identify the very last letter of the first word, since that is the only letter that can ever move in this question type.
- Remove that letter from the first word and check that what remains is still a correctly spelled, real word.
- Add the same letter to the front of the second word and check that this also creates a correctly spelled, real word.
- Only accept a letter as correct if it passes both checks; a letter that only works on one side is not the answer.
- Work through each answer option methodically, since the answer choices in this set do not always list the word's letters in order.
- Watch out for shorter, less common but genuine words; some correct answers are informal or slightly old-fashioned terms rather than everyday vocabulary.
Worked example
(PLANK) (NOT). Exactly one letter can move from the end of the first word to the front of the second word so that both words made are still correctly spelled real words. Which letter moves? A) P B) L C) A D) N E) K
- Remove the last letter of PLANK: taking away K leaves PLAN, a real word.
- Add that same letter, K, to the front of NOT: this makes KNOT, a real word.
- So K is the letter that moves, which is option E.
- None of the other letters is the actual last letter of PLANK, so none of them can be the letter that moves.
