Food, family celebrations and regional customs form a translation topic covering adjective agreement and position when describing food, comparatives for comparing regional dishes, reflexive verbs se réunir/se rassembler for family gatherings, and quantity expressions (beaucoup de, un morceau de, plusieurs). Examiners are testing correct adjective agreement with feminine/masculine food nouns and accurate translation of quantity expressions that all use de/d' regardless of the noun that follows.

Method
- Read the whole sentence/passage first.
- Identify tense/person: present tense for family traditions that still happen, perfect/imperfect for a specific past celebration or childhood memory.
- Translate quantity expressions with de/d' (never du/de la/des) after them: beaucoup de gâteaux, un morceau de fromage, plusieurs plats, trop de sucre.
- Build comparatives for comparing regional dishes: ce plat est plus épicé que l'autre (this dish is spicier than the other one); remember the adjective agrees with the noun.
- Use the reflexive verbs se réunir and se rassembler (to gather/get together) for family celebrations, conjugating the reflexive pronoun to match the subject and, in the perfect tense, with être and agreement.
- Write a full draft, then check adjective agreement last: food adjectives must match the gender and number of the dish or ingredient (une tarte délicieuse, des plats épicés).
- Read the finished sentence back for natural phrasing.
Worked example
Translate into French: Every Christmas, my whole family gathers to share a huge meal, and my grandmother always makes a delicious cake with lots of chocolate.
- Chunk the sentence: 'Every Christmas, my whole family gathers' / 'to share a huge meal' / 'my grandmother always makes a delicious cake with lots of chocolate'.
- 'gathers' is the reflexive se réunir/se rassembler in the present tense, since it is a yearly habit: chaque Noël, toute ma famille se réunit.
- 'to share a huge meal' uses the infinitive after a purpose clause: pour partager un énorme repas.
- 'a delicious cake' needs the adjective délicieux to agree with the masculine noun gâteau: un gâteau délicieux.
- 'lots of chocolate' uses beaucoup de (never du) before the noun: avec beaucoup de chocolat.
- Full translation: Chaque Noël, toute ma famille se réunit pour partager un énorme repas, et ma grand-mère prépare toujours un gâteau délicieux avec beaucoup de chocolat.
