The Western Front, 1914-18: Trench Systems and the Terrain of the British Sector

On the Western Front of the First World War, 1914-18, the trench system was the network of dug fortifications that both armies built and occupied for most of the war, and the terrain of the British sector shaped how it was built and how conditions inside it varied. A typical position had a front line trench facing no man's land, a support line and a reserve line behind it, all connected by communication trenches, with the lines dug in a zigzag pattern of short sections called traverses to stop blast and enfilade fire travelling far along a trench. Terrain varied sharply across the British sector: the low-lying, reclaimed land of Belgian Flanders, around the Ypres Salient, had a high water table that made trenches flood easily and kept the ground permanently muddy, while the chalk downland further south around the Somme and Arras allowed deeper trenches and, at Arras, extensive underground tunnelling through old quarries. This terrain contrast directly affected medical conditions, since the wettest sections of the line saw far more trench foot and made wounds more likely to become infected with soil bacteria.

Method

  1. Learn the three main trench lines in order back from no man's land: front line, support line, reserve line, and that communication trenches connected them so movement did not have to cross open ground.
  2. Learn the standard trench features examiners expect named: the fire step (for firing over the parapet), sandbags forming the parapet and parados, duckboards laid on the trench floor, and dugouts cut into the trench wall for shelter.
  3. Learn why trenches were dug in a zigzag of short traverses rather than straight lines: it stopped an enemy who broke into a trench firing straight along it, and it limited how far a shell blast or shrapnel could travel down the trench.
  4. Learn the terrain contrast that examiners test: Flanders (the Ypres Salient) was low-lying with a high water table, so trenches flooded and stayed muddy, while the Somme and Arras sat on drier chalk downland that allowed deeper trenches and, at Arras, tunnelling through old quarries known as the Boves.
  5. Learn what a 'salient' means and why the Ypres Salient was dangerous: British trenches bulged into German-held territory on three sides, so troops there could be fired on from the front and both flanks at once.
  6. Link terrain to medical outcomes: wetter Flanders sections produced far more trench foot cases (EDX.WF1), and heavily manured, waterlogged soil across the sector carried the bacteria that caused gas gangrene in deep wounds (EDX.WF4).

Worked example

Explain how the terrain of the British sector of the Western Front differed between the Ypres Salient and the Somme, and give one medical consequence of this difference.

  1. State the Ypres Salient's terrain: low-lying, reclaimed Flanders farmland with a high water table close to the surface.
  2. State the consequence for trenches there: trenches filled with water easily and could rarely be dug very deep, so men stood for long periods in cold, waterlogged conditions.
  3. State the Somme's terrain by contrast: firmer chalk downland further south in France.
  4. State the consequence for trenches there: chalk allowed deeper, better-drained trenches and dugouts, and at nearby Arras allowed extensive underground tunnelling.
  5. Give the medical consequence: the wetter Flanders sections saw significantly more cases of trench foot, since prolonged immersion in cold water and mud was the direct cause of the condition.
