Coins and Money to 20p
Coins and Money to 20p is the Year 1 National Curriculum skill of recognising and naming the UK coins worth up to 20p (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p) by their size, colour and shape, and finding the total value of two or three of these coins together, always keeping the total at or below 20p.
Method
- Start with real or play coins spread out, and sort them into groups by value, matching coins that look the same size and colour together, before any adding is done.
- Learn to name and recognise each coin up to 20p by its features: the small copper 1p and 2p coins, the small silver 5p and 10p coins, and the larger silver 20p coin.
- Practise reading the number printed on a coin as its value in pence, so the child links the physical coin to the written number '5' or '10' plus the letter 'p'.
- To find the total of two or three coins, count on from the largest coin's value first, then add the smaller coins one at a time.
- Directly challenge the 'more coins means more money' misconception: line up five 1p coins next to a single 5p coin and count each pile aloud, so the child sees the totals match even though one pile has more coins.
- Practise comparing two small groups of coins to see which is worth more, always by adding up each group's total first rather than counting the number of coins in each group.
- Keep every total within this topic at or below 20p; a total that would go over 20p is a sign to bring in the next coin up, 50p, which is next year's work.
Worked example
Ollie has a 10p coin, a 5p coin and a 2p coin in his pocket. How much money does he have altogether?
- Start with the largest coin: 10p.
- Add the next coin: 10p + 5p = 15p.
- Add the last coin: 15p + 2p = 17p.
- Ollie has 17p altogether.
