Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Skim the whole paper before starting, since questions generally get harder as the paper goes on; pace yourself so you have time for the later questions.
  2. Decide quickly whether each question is a known fact you can answer straight away, or one that needs a formal written method.
  3. Use column addition or subtraction for numbers too large to work out mentally.
  4. Use short multiplication for multiplying by a single digit, and long multiplication (partial products) for multiplying by a 2-digit number.
  5. Use short division (the 'bus stop' method) for dividing by a single digit, and long division for dividing by a 2-digit number.
  6. For fraction, decimal and percentage questions, convert to a common form (for example, a common denominator) before calculating.
  7. Apply the order of operations for any question with brackets or more than one type of operation: brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
  8. Leave your working in the space provided, since 2-mark questions usually award a method mark even if the final answer has a small slip.

Worked example

Work out 4536 divided by 12.

  1. Set up short division (the 'bus stop' method) with 12 dividing into 4536.
  2. 12 into 4 does not go, so carry the 4 to make 45. 12 into 45 = 3 remainder 9 (3 x 12 = 36, 45 - 36 = 9).
  3. Carry the 9 to make 93. 12 into 93 = 7 remainder 9 (7 x 12 = 84, 93 - 84 = 9).
  4. Carry the 9 to make 96. 12 into 96 = 8 remainder 0.
  5. Reading the digits found gives 378, so 4536 divided by 12 = 378. Check: 378 x 12 = 4536, which matches.
