Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Learn the key metric conversion facts: 10mm = 1cm, 100cm = 1m, 1000m = 1km, 1000g = 1kg, and 1000ml = 1l.
  2. To convert from a smaller unit to a larger one, divide; to convert from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply.
  3. Line up decimal points and match units carefully when adding or subtracting measurements or money.
  4. To find change, subtract the total cost from the amount paid.
  5. To read the 24-hour clock, add 12 to any afternoon or evening hour shown on a 12-hour clock (for example, 3:40pm is 15:40).
  6. To find a duration, count on from the start time to the next whole hour, then add on the remaining minutes.
  7. Always check that the units of two measurements match before comparing or combining them.

Worked example

A train leaves at 14:45 and arrives at 17:20. How long is the journey?

  1. Count on from 14:45 to the next whole hour, 15:00: that takes 15 minutes.
  2. Count on from 15:00 to 17:00: that takes 2 hours.
  3. Count on from 17:00 to 17:20: that takes 20 minutes.
  4. Add the parts together: 15 minutes + 2 hours + 20 minutes = 2 hours 35 minutes.
