Statistics: Line Graphs and Tables

In Year 4, pupils extend chart reading from Year 3's bar charts and pictograms to line graphs (sometimes called time graphs), which show how a continuous quantity such as temperature or distance changes over time.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Read the title of the line graph or table first to find out what data is being shown and the units used.
  2. On a line graph, check what the horizontal axis represents (often time, such as days or hours) and what the vertical axis represents (the quantity being measured).
  3. Work out the value of each small division on the vertical axis before reading any point, in the same way as for a bar chart.
  4. To read a value at a labelled point, trace up from the axis to the line, then across to the scale.
  5. To estimate a value between two plotted points, judge how far along the line is between the two nearest gridlines.
  6. For a two-way table, read down the correct row and across the correct column to find the cell where they meet.
  7. For 'how many more/fewer' or 'total' questions, find the relevant values first, then subtract or add them.

Worked example

A line graph shows the temperature in a garden recorded every 2 hours: 6am = 8C, 8am = 11C, 10am = 15C, 12pm = 19C, 2pm = 21C, 4pm = 17C. Work out the difference between the highest and lowest temperatures recorded, and state at what time the temperature was highest.

  1. List all the recorded temperatures: 8, 11, 15, 19, 21 and 17 degrees C.
  2. Identify the highest value: 21C, recorded at 2pm.
  3. Identify the lowest value: 8C, recorded at 6am.
  4. Subtract to find the difference: 21 - 8 = 13.
  5. So the difference between the highest and lowest temperatures is 13C, and the highest temperature was recorded at 2pm.
