Health, Fitness and Wellbeing: Macronutrients - Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein
Macronutrients are the nutrients the body needs in relatively large amounts for energy, health, fitness and wellbeing, and the raw materials for growth and repair: carbohydrate, fat and protein.
Before you start
No specific prerequisites - this is a good place to start.
Method
- Learn the primary role of each macronutrient in one phrase: carbohydrate = main energy source, fat = energy store and insulation, protein = growth and repair.
- Learn the difference between simple carbohydrates (sugars, quick energy release) and complex carbohydrates (starches, slower and more sustained energy release), with a food example for each.
- Learn the difference between saturated fat (animal sources, linked to raised cholesterol in excess) and unsaturated fat (plant/fish sources, generally the healthier option).
- Learn that protein is not normally the body's main energy source, but is used to build and repair muscle tissue after exercise.
- For 'explain why sport X needs more of nutrient Y' questions, name the nutrient's role, then link it directly to the specific physical demand of that sport (e.g. sustained energy, or muscle repair after resistance work).
- For an extended question comparing two different athletes' diets, deal with each nutrient in turn and explain how the balance should differ, rather than describing one athlete's diet in full before starting the second.
Worked example
A marathon runner and a weightlifter are each planning their diet for a training block. Explain why the marathon runner should prioritise a diet relatively higher in carbohydrate, while the weightlifter should prioritise a diet relatively higher in protein.
- State carbohydrate's role: it is the body's main and most readily available energy source, especially for sustained, moderate-intensity work.
- Apply this to the marathon runner: running for over two hours requires a large, steady supply of energy, so a high-carbohydrate diet helps maintain glycogen stores and delay fatigue.
- State protein's role: it provides the amino acids needed to repair and build muscle tissue that has been broken down by exercise.
- Apply this to the weightlifter: resistance training causes greater muscle damage and aims to increase muscle size and strength, so extra protein supports the repair and growth process.
- Conclude: because the two sports place different demands on the body (sustained energy versus muscle repair and growth), each athlete should adjust the balance of their diet to match, without needing to remove either nutrient.
