Somatotypes and Matching Body Type to Sporting Activity
A somatotype is a classification of body shape based on three extreme categories: endomorph (a rounder body shape with a higher proportion of body fat), mesomorph (a muscular, wedge-shaped body) and ectomorph (a slim, narrow body shape with long limbs).

Method
- Learn the three somatotypes by name and their key physical characteristics: endomorph (rounder, higher body fat), mesomorph (muscular, wedge-shaped), ectomorph (slim, narrow, long limbs).
- Learn that most people are a blend of somatotypes rather than a pure example of just one, and be ready to describe a body as, for example, 'mesomorph with some ectomorph characteristics'.
- For each somatotype, learn one named sport it typically suits and the specific physical reason why (not just 'because they are strong' - explain what the body shape does for performance).
- When asked to match a somatotype to a sport, always justify the match using a physical demand of the sport (e.g. explosive power, a low centre of gravity, minimal weight to carry over distance).
- Remember that somatotype is only one factor in sporting success - be ready to acknowledge that skill, training and psychological factors also matter, especially in an 'evaluate' or 'discuss' question.
- For an extended question comparing somatotypes across different sports, structure your answer sport by sport (or somatotype by somatotype), giving a clear physical reason for each match.
Worked example
Explain why a mesomorph body type is well suited to sprinting, and why an ectomorph body type is generally less well suited to sprinting.
- Describe the mesomorph: a muscular, wedge-shaped body with wide shoulders and a narrow waist.
- Link mesomorph characteristics to sprinting: greater muscle mass allows a more powerful, forceful contraction against the ground, generating the explosive power sprinting requires over a short distance.
- Describe the ectomorph: a slim, narrow body shape with long limbs and low levels of muscle and fat.
- Link ectomorph characteristics to sprinting: lower muscle mass means less force can be generated per stride, so an ectomorph typically produces less explosive power than a mesomorph of similar training level.
- Conclude: because sprinting depends on generating maximum force very quickly, the greater muscle mass of a mesomorph gives a physical advantage that an ectomorph's build does not provide.
