Ethnicity and Educational Achievement
Ethnicity and educational achievement is the sociological study of why average school attainment differs between ethnic groups in the UK, examined through external explanations outside school, such as material deprivation, and internal explanations inside school, such as institutional racism and teacher labelling.

Method
- Separate external (outside school) explanations from internal (inside school) explanations, since both earn credit and a strong answer usually covers both.
- For external factors, apply material deprivation, some minority ethnic groups are statistically more likely to live in poverty, and cultural factors such as language barriers for some recently-arrived families, without assuming this applies to a whole ethnic group uniformly.
- For internal factors, apply the concept of institutional racism, discrimination built into the everyday practices of an organisation such as a school rather than the prejudice of one individual.
- Apply Gillborn and Youdell's research on teacher labelling, streaming and what they term educational triage, where teachers under pressure to meet targets focus attention on pupils judged likely to achieve the highest grades, which can disadvantage pupils who are stereotyped as less able.
- Apply the concept of an ethnocentric curriculum, a curriculum built around the culture, history and perspective of one ethnic group as the default, which can make pupils from other backgrounds feel less represented or valued.
- Always name a specific ethnic group when a question asks for one, rather than writing generally about ethnic minorities as a single undifferentiated group, since patterns of achievement differ between groups.
- For a 12-mark discuss question, weigh external (material/cultural) explanations against internal (institutional racism, labelling) explanations and reach a supported conclusion.
Worked example
Discuss the argument that institutional racism inside schools, rather than material deprivation outside school, best explains differences in achievement between ethnic groups.
- Set out the institutional racism case: Gillborn and Youdell's research on labelling, streaming and educational triage shows how teacher expectations and school processes can disadvantage pupils from some ethnic groups independently of ability.
- Add detail on the ethnocentric curriculum, arguing that a curriculum centred on one ethnic group's history and culture can affect some pupils' sense of belonging and engagement with school.
- Set out the material deprivation case: some minority ethnic groups are, on average, more likely to live in poverty, which independently affects resources for study, regardless of anything that happens inside school.
- Compare the two cases: material deprivation cannot, on its own, explain why some minority ethnic groups from similar economic backgrounds still show different average outcomes, which points towards school-based processes such as labelling as an additional, independent cause.
- Reach a conclusion: both explanations likely operate together, but the case for institutional racism is strengthened by evidence that achievement gaps persist even after material circumstances are taken into account.
