Primary and Secondary Data, Quantitative and Qualitative Data
Primary data is data collected first-hand by the researcher for their specific research purpose, using methods such as questionnaires, interviews, observation or experiments.

Method
- When a question gives a data example, classify it correctly on both axes: is it primary or secondary, and is it quantitative or qualitative, since a single dataset can be any combination.
- Link quantitative data to strengths of reliability, replicability and the ability to spot patterns or correlations across a large sample.
- Link qualitative data to strengths of validity and depth, capturing meanings and context a number cannot show.
- Link primary data to the strength of being collected specifically to answer the sociologist's own research question, but note it is more time-consuming and costly to collect than using existing secondary data.
- Link secondary data to practicality, already existing, often free or quick and large-scale, but note the validity risk that it was not originally collected for the sociologist's exact purpose.
- In evaluation answers, note that many sociologists use methodological pluralism, or triangulation, combining more than one data type to balance the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Worked example
A sociologist studying school exclusions collects two sets of data: the Department for Education's published exclusion rate statistics by pupil ethnicity, and transcripts of unstructured interviews she conducted with 12 excluded pupils about their experiences. Classify each dataset as primary or secondary, and as quantitative or qualitative.
- Classify the Department for Education statistics: they already existed and were collected by a government body for a different original purpose, so they are secondary data; they are numerical rates, so they are quantitative data.
- Classify the interview transcripts: the sociologist collected them herself, specifically for this research, so they are primary data; they are detailed, descriptive accounts of pupils' experiences rather than numbers, so they are qualitative data.
- Note the value of combining them: the secondary quantitative statistics show the scale and pattern of exclusions by ethnicity, while the primary qualitative interviews add depth and validity by explaining the excluded pupils' own experiences and the meanings behind the statistics.
