The Conditional Tense: Formation and Everyday Uses
The conditional tense is formed by adding -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the infinitive, reusing exactly the same twelve irregular stems as the simple future (tendría, podría, diría, haría and so on). The examiner is testing correct formation and the everyday uses of the conditional at GCSE: polite requests (¿Podrías...?), giving advice with deber (deberías), hypothetical outcomes (si tuviera dinero, viajaría), and reported speech, where a future statement in direct speech becomes a conditional when reported (dijo que llegaría a las ocho).

Method
- Form the conditional by adding -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the full infinitive for regular verbs: hablaría, comería, viviría - these endings look identical to the -er/-ir imperfect endings, but they attach to the whole infinitive rather than a stem, so the base word shows which tense is meant.
- Reuse exactly the same twelve irregular stems as the simple future, since the conditional and the future share their irregularities: tendría, pondría, saldría, vendría, podría, sabría, habría, querría, diría, haría, valdría, cabría.
- Use the conditional to talk about what would happen under a hypothetical or unreal condition, often with a si + imperfect subjunctive clause at higher tier: si tuviera más dinero, viajaría por el mundo.
- Use the conditional for polite requests and suggestions: ¿Podrías ayudarme?, Me gustaría un café, Deberías estudiar más - these softened forms are far more common in GCSE Spanish than full hypothetical sentences.
- Use the conditional to give advice with deber + infinitive: deberías hacer más ejercicio.
- Use the conditional in reported speech to report what someone said they would do, replacing a future tense in the original statement: Dijo que llegaría a las ocho (He said he would arrive at eight), where the direct speech was Llegaré a las ocho.
- Do not confuse the conditional (-ía attached to the whole infinitive, comería from comer) with the imperfect of -er/-ir verbs (-ía attached to a stem with no irregular forms for regular verbs) - only the sentence around the verb shows which is meant.
Worked example
Complete the sentences with the correct conditional form: Si ganara la lotería, yo (comprar) una casa nueva y (viajar) por el mundo. Mis padres (poder) jubilarse antes y mi hermana (tener) su propio negocio. Sin embargo, yo (deber) ser prudente con el dinero.
- comprar is a regular -ar verb; add -ía to the infinitive for the yo form: compraría.
- viajar follows the same pattern: viajaría.
- poder has the irregular conditional stem podr- (the same as its future stem); the subject is mis padres (ellos), so the ending is -ían: podrían.
- tener has the irregular stem tendr-; the subject is mi hermana (ella), so the ending is -ía: tendría.
- deber is regular; the yo form is debería.
- Full answer: Si ganara la lotería, yo compraría una casa nueva y viajaría por el mundo. Mis padres podrían jubilarse antes y mi hermana tendría su propio negocio. Sin embargo, yo debería ser prudente con el dinero.

Answer: As the conditional of comer it means 'I would eat'; as the imperfect it also means 'I used to eat / was eating' - only the surrounding sentence shows which is meant, since comer + ía looks identical in both.
