Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Skim the whole question first to spot how many steps it needs, since Set 7 favours short multi-step problems over single calculations.
  2. Estimate the size of the final answer before calculating in detail, by rounding each number, so you can spot an error quickly.
  3. Use known equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages to avoid a longer written calculation wherever possible.
  4. When a question mixes units (for example minutes and hours, or pence and pounds), convert everything to the smaller unit first, then convert the final answer back if needed.
  5. For a ratio question, always check which quantity the question is actually asking for before giving your final answer, since it is easy to give the wrong share.
  6. Keep calm under time pressure: if you cannot recall a fact instantly, work it out from a fact you do know, such as building 7 x 8 from 7 x 4 doubled.

Worked example

A meeting starts at 14:35 and lasts 1 hour 50 minutes. Work out the time the meeting ends.

  1. Add the hour first: 14:35 + 1 hour = 15:35.
  2. Add 25 of the remaining 50 minutes to reach a round number: 15:35 + 25 minutes = 16:00.
  3. Add the final 25 minutes: 16:00 + 25 minutes = 16:25.
  4. So the meeting ends at 16:25.
