Science: Full Practice Paper 8
Full Practice Paper 8 is an eighth complete practice paper in the style of 13+ Common Entrance Science, again combining Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions in one timed sitting, with a similar spread of question types to the real ISEB paper.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Note the total marks and time for the paper before starting, and use this to check periodically whether you are on pace, particularly halfway through the paper.
- Underline key numbers and units given in each question, especially in calculation questions, so that you do not accidentally use the wrong value when substituting into an equation.
- Answer descriptive questions in full sentences rather than single words where the mark allocation suggests more than one point is needed, since examiners cannot award a mark for an idea that is not clearly stated.
- For a calculation, always write the equation first, substitute carefully, show your working line by line, and state the final answer with the correct unit.
- When a question compares two set-ups, for example two different materials or two circuits, answer by directly comparing them rather than only describing one, since comparison questions are marked on the comparison itself.
- At the end, check that any answer describing a change (increase, decrease, stays the same) actually matches the direction implied by your own calculation or reasoning.
Worked example
A crane lifts a load by exerting a constant force of 500 N over a distance of 8 m, taking 20 seconds to do so. (a) Use work done = force x distance to calculate the work done by the crane. (b) Use power = work done / time to calculate the power of the crane.
- Substitute the given force and distance into work done = force x distance: work done = 500 x 8.
- Multiply 500 by 8 to find the work done: 500 x 8 = 4000 J.
- Substitute the work done just found and the time taken into power = work done / time: power = 4000 / 20.
- Divide 4000 by 20 to find the power: 4000 / 20 = 200 W.
- Final answer: (a) work done = 4000 J; (b) power = 200 W.

A pupil tests three test tubes, each containing starch solution and the enzyme amylase, kept at 20 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 80 degrees C. After 10 minutes, she tests each for the presence of starch using iodine solution. (a) State what colour with iodine would show that starch is still present. (b) Predict which of the three test tubes would still show starch present after 10 minutes, giving a reason in terms of enzyme activity. (c) Explain why the enzyme's activity is affected in the way you describe at this temperature.
