Passage A: The School Trip

Last Tuesday, the Year 6 pupils made an early start for the coach journey to Conwy Castle. By the time the coach reached the car park, the rain had almost stopped and a pale sun was breaking through the clouds. Nasreen, who had never visited a castle before, gripped her notebook tightly and grinned at her partner, David. 'I can't wait to climb the towers,' she said, though she had been scared of heights ever since the school residential trip to Snowdonia.

Passage B: The Science Fair

Priya, whose project investigated how quickly ice melts in salt water, spent two weeks recording her results. The judge who awarded first prize was impressed by her clear graphs. Oluwaseun, who built a model volcano, waited nervously beside his table, while his little sister sat in the front row taking photographs. By the end of the afternoon, everyone agreed that the results had been worth the effort.

Passage C: The Debate Club

If the weather were fine on Saturday, the debate club would hold its practice session in the school garden instead of the hall. Mr Okafor, the club's coordinator, insisted that every member be prepared with at least three arguments before the session began. Whoever presented the strongest evidence would lead the opening round, he explained beforehand, though he privately admitted that he might have chosen Priya from the start, since her research on renewable energy was clearly the most thorough.
