1 The instructions on the entry form seemed simple enough to Priya Anand
2 when she first read them: build a bridge from thirty centimetres of balsa
3 wood strips and forty centimetres of masking tape, strong enough to span a
4 twenty centimetre gap and hold as much weight as possible without
5 collapsing. Priya and her partner Tomasz had signed up for the Riverside
6 Bridge Challenge weeks earlier, mostly because Mr Adeyemi had promised
7 there would be a trophy and, more importantly, doughnuts. Neither of them
8 had built anything sturdier than a den out of garden chairs, so their
9 first attempt looked less like a bridge and more like a badly folded fan.
10 They propped it between two stacks of textbooks and gently rested a single
11 steel weight on the middle. It sagged, creaked, and then folded flat onto
12 the desk with a small, humiliating clatter. Tomasz groaned and put his
13 head in his hands, muttering that they should have entered the poster
14 competition instead. Priya wanted to agree with him, but something about
15 watching the team beside them kept her quiet. Their rivals' bridge was
16 made of the same flimsy strips, yet it was covered in small triangles,

32 before that afternoon. On the morning of the competition, their rebuilt
33 bridge looked almost professional compared with their first soggy attempt,
34 though it was still lighter and thinner than several others lined up along
35 the judges' table. When their turn finally came, a steward began lowering
36 a bucket onto a hook hung from the centre of the span, adding steel
37 weights one at a time while the whole room went quiet around them. The
38 bridge groaned faintly at four hundred grams, held firm through six
39 hundred, and finally gave way at just over eight hundred, splitting
40 cleanly along one triangle near the left support. It was nowhere near the
41 load the eventual winners achieved, a team whose bridge held almost double
42 Priya and Tomasz's final score before it failed, but eight hundred grams
43 from two people who had never built anything before that week felt like an
44 achievement rather than a defeat. Tomasz punched the air as though they
45 had won outright, and honestly, for a moment, it felt exactly like they
46 had. Mr Adeyemi told them afterwards that the winning team had entered the
47 challenge three years running, quietly refining the same basic design each
48 time, while Priya and Tomasz had built theirs from nothing in a single
