Each question shows two complete pairs of words that share the same hidden relationship, followed by a third pair in which the second word is missing. Work out how the first two pairs are linked, then choose the option (A to E) that completes the third pair in exactly the same way. Only one option is correct in each question. The relationship might be a meaning link (such as opposites, a group and its members, or a job and its tool) or a spelling link (such as reversing the letters or removing letters from the front of the word). Watch out for options that use the right letters or a related idea but apply the rule the wrong way. Study the worked example below before you begin, then work through the questions in order: they start off easier and get harder as you go.
Worked example. (HOT, COLD) (UP, DOWN) (FAST, ?)
A) Speed B) Quick C) Slow D) Run E) Stop Answer: C) Slow. The first two pairs are linked by opposites: hot is the opposite of cold, and up is the opposite of down. Applying the same relationship to the third pair, the opposite of fast is slow, so C is correct. 'Speed' is the noun form of fast rather than its opposite, 'Quick' is a synonym rather than an opposite, 'Run' is an action associated with being fast rather than its opposite, and 'Stop' is the opposite of go or move rather than the opposite of fast itself.
