1.7 Rounding

Revision notes: Rounding

Rounding means writing a number to a stated level of accuracy: to a given number of decimal places (d.p.), a given number of significant figures (s.f.), or to the nearest unit, 10, 100 and so on. It is used throughout GCSE maths to give sensible, checkable answers and to estimate calculations quickly.

  1. Find the place value you are rounding to and look at the digit immediately after it (the 'decider' digit).
  2. If the decider digit is 5 or more, round the target digit up by 1. If it is 4 or less, leave the target digit unchanged.
  3. For decimal places, drop every digit after the target place. For significant figures, keep place value by replacing dropped whole-number digits with 0.
  4. For estimating a calculation, round every number in it to 1 significant figure first, then work out the simplified calculation.
Worked example. Round 3.4762 to (a) 2 decimal places, and (b) 3 significant figures.
  1. (a) The 2nd decimal place is 7; the next digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up: 3.4762 -> 3.48.
  2. (b) The 3rd significant figure is the 7 (3, 4, 7 are the first three significant figures); the next digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up: 3.4762 -> 3.48.
Answer: 3.48 (both parts, to 2 d.p. and 3 s.f.).
