The Year 5 Garden Project

For the past month, Year 5 have been transforming the old flower bed behind the science block into a vegetable garden. Mrs Bennett has organised the class into four small teams, and each team has taken responsibility for a different bed. Tom's team have already planted three rows of carrots, and Aisha has watered them every single day since the seeds went in. Nobody has forgotten to check the greenhouse thermometer, because Mr Diallo has explained how quickly seedlings can die in the cold. Priya's team have just finished building a small compost bin from old wooden pallets, and they have never worked with tools like this before. So far, the tomato plants have grown taller than anyone expected, although the peas have not appeared yet. The head teacher has already asked whether the vegetables could be sold at the summer fair, and the class has agreed that any money raised will go towards new gardening equipment. Nobody has given up, even on the wettest days, and the whole school has noticed how much the garden has changed since the project began.
