Every July, Elm Park Primary held its sports day on the field behind the school hall. This year the sun was hotter than last year's, and the grass felt drier underfoot. Priya lined up for the sprint, certain that she was faster than her rival, Tom, although she still felt more nervous than she had expected. When the whistle blew, Tom shot ahead, and for a moment it looked as though he would finish in the fastest time of the day, but Priya did not give up and crossed the line just ahead of him after all. Later, in the long jump, Aisha's final attempt was longer than anyone else's, earning her the best score of the afternoon. The high jump proved trickier for everyone, and the bar kept rising until only two competitors remained; Ben cleared the highest height of the competition, well beyond his previous record. By the end of the day, the youngest pupils were the noisiest as they cheered for the relay, and Mr Patel declared that it had been an even better sports day than last year's, and quite possibly the most exciting the school had ever held.
