Elsie had worked as the lighthouse keeper on Raven Point for almost thirty years, and she found the ancient stone tower far more reliable than any modern automated system. Some evenings the sea was perfectly calm, so still that the beam seemed to float across glass; other evenings a turbulent storm hurled spray against the windows and rattled the old iron door. Elsie was never reckless with the warning signs, though the younger keepers who visited sometimes felt she was far too cautious. Visitors often assumed the job was permanent misery, yet Elsie found it a temporary escape from the mainland, a chance to trade the city's constant uproar for the island's welcome silence. When ships approached in fog, the powerful beam that was usually so visible from twenty miles away became almost invisible, and Elsie relied on the fog horn instead. She kept a logbook, recording whether each night had been calm or stormy, and she never allowed herself to feel proud when the weather stayed gentle nor ashamed when a storm forced her to sound the alarm. After thirty years, Elsie's memory of the mainland had grown vague, but her knowledge of every rock beneath Raven Point remained astonishingly precise.
