Branding and Its Role in Marketing
Branding is the process of creating a distinct identity and set of associations, such as a name, logo, values and reputation, for a product or business, so customers can recognise it and hold particular beliefs and feelings about it.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Learn the key branding terms: brand identity or image (how the brand is perceived), brand loyalty (customers repeatedly choosing the brand), brand recognition (customers identifying the brand, e.g. from its logo), and brand equity (the added value a brand's name gives a product).
- Learn the main benefits branding gives a business: the ability to charge a premium price, easier launch of new products under an established name (brand extension), repeat purchase and loyalty, and a defence against competitors.
- Learn that branding must be consistent with the rest of the marketing mix: a brand built on being premium or ethical needs its product quality, pricing and promotion to reinforce that image, or the brand's credibility is undermined.
- Learn the risk of over-extending a brand: launching very different products under the same name can dilute the brand's identity or damage its reputation if the new product fails to meet expectations.
- For 'explain' questions, name the branding benefit or risk plus the linked consequence for the business's sales, price or reputation.
- For 'evaluate' or 'assess' questions on a branding decision, such as a brand extension or rebrand, weigh the benefits against the risks specific to the case's business and reach a supported judgement naming the business.
Worked example
Ford and Vale is a well-known, trusted brand of premium walking boots, established over 30 years. It is considering launching a new range of budget walking boots under the same Ford and Vale name, priced significantly below its usual range, to be sold in discount outdoor stores. Recommend whether Ford and Vale should launch this budget range under its existing brand name, with a reason.
- Consider the benefit of using the existing name: Ford and Vale's established reputation for quality could give the new budget range instant recognition and trust, helping it sell faster than an unknown new brand would.
- Consider the risk: if the budget boots are lower quality, which is likely given the lower price, customers who try them and are disappointed may transfer that negative experience onto their view of the whole Ford and Vale brand, including its premium range.
- Consider brand consistency: Ford and Vale's brand equity has been built over 30 years on being premium, so a budget range sold in discount stores is inconsistent with this image and could confuse customers about what the brand stands for.
- Weigh the short-term sales benefit of brand recognition against the longer-term risk of diluting 30 years of premium brand equity.
- Recommend against using the existing name for the budget range; Ford and Vale should launch it under a new, separate brand name, protecting its premium brand's reputation and equity while still allowing the business to compete in the budget segment.
