GL Assessment Style Maths Mock Paper 1
A GL Assessment style maths mock paper is a timed practice test that mimics the format used by GL Assessment, one of the most widely used 11+ test providers in England, whose tests many grammar schools and consortiums use for selection. It is typically multiple-choice, answered on a separate answer sheet, tightly timed (often around 45 to 50 minutes), and covers a wide range of Key Stage 2 maths topics at a faster pace, and with more problem-solving style questions, than a standard school test.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before starting, check how long you have and roughly how many questions there are, so you can pace yourself, for example aiming for under a minute per question on a 50-question, 50-minute paper.
- Attempt questions in order, but do not get stuck: if a question is taking too long, mark your best guess or skip it and come back at the end if time allows.
- Read each question and all the multiple-choice options before calculating, since you can sometimes eliminate obviously wrong options quickly.
- Use rough estimation to check whether your calculated answer matches one of the given options, which can catch calculation mistakes quickly.
- Fill in the answer sheet carefully in the correct row for each question, checking every few questions that you have not slipped out of alignment.
- In the last few minutes, go back to any skipped questions rather than re-checking answers you are already confident about, since an unanswered question definitely scores zero.
Worked example
Question 14 of a GL-style multiple-choice maths paper: A ribbon is 3.6 m long. It is cut into pieces 0.4 m long. How many full pieces can be cut? A) 8 B) 9 C) 10 D) 90
- Identify the calculation needed: total length divided by the length of each piece, 3.6 / 0.4.
- To avoid dividing decimals directly, multiply both numbers by 10: 3.6 x 10 = 36, and 0.4 x 10 = 4.
- Divide the whole numbers instead: 36 / 4 = 9.
- Compare 9 to the options given: option B is 9.
- Select option B, and check it is sensible: 9 pieces of 0.4 m use exactly 9 x 0.4 = 3.6 m, which matches the ribbon length.
