GL Assessment Style Maths Mock Paper 2
GL Assessment's second maths mock paper follows the same format as the first: multiple choice, timed at around 45 to 50 minutes, and answered on a separate machine-readable answer sheet, since that is how most GL Assessment 11+ tests are delivered in England. Paper 2 leans more heavily on fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio set inside brief real-life contexts, alongside the pure number and shape questions from Paper 1, so pupils meet the same fast pace but with a shift in the mix of skills being tested.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before starting, glance over the paper to see how many questions involve fractions, decimals or percentages, since Paper 2 tends to include more of these than a pure arithmetic paper.
- Convert confidently between fractions, decimals and percentages of the same value, such as recognising that 3/4 equals 75% equals 0.75, so you are not slowed down by conversion mid-question.
- For multiple choice, use the answer options to check plausibility: if your calculated percentage or fraction does not match any option, re-check your conversion step first.
- Show working in the margin or scrap space for ratio and percentage questions, since these are easy to slip a step on even though the paper is multiple choice.
- Keep track of time evenly across the paper: do not let one tricky fraction question eat the time budget for three easier ones.
- In the final few minutes, revisit only the questions you flagged as uncertain, particularly any with percentage or ratio calculations.
Worked example
Question 9 of a GL-style multiple-choice maths paper: In a class of 30 pupils, 40% walk to school, 1/3 travel by car, and the rest come by bus. How many pupils come by bus? A) 6 B) 8 C) 9 D) 12
- Find the number who walk: 40% of 30 = 12 (since 10% of 30 = 3, so 40% = 4 x 3 = 12).
- Find the number who travel by car: 1/3 of 30 = 10.
- Add these together: 12 + 10 = 22 pupils walk or travel by car.
- Subtract from the total to find the rest: 30 - 22 = 8.
- Compare to the options: 8 matches option B, so select B.
