GL Assessment Style Maths Mock Paper 3
GL Assessment's third maths mock paper keeps the same multiple-choice, machine-marked format as Papers 1 and 2, timed at around 45 to 50 minutes, but shifts its emphasis towards averages, data handling and multi-step problems that combine two or more operations in a single question, alongside the arithmetic, shape and fraction questions found throughout the series. By Paper 3, pupils should be comfortable enough with the format to focus fully on the maths itself.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- For an averages question, recall that the mean is the total divided by how many values there are, and be ready to work in either direction, from values to a mean or from a mean back to a missing value.
- Read a data question carefully to check whether it is asking for the mean, the range, the mode or the median, since these are easy to confuse under time pressure.
- In a multiple-choice averages question, use the answer options to sanity-check: the mean should always lie somewhere between the smallest and largest value given.
- For a multi-step question, work out and note each intermediate value before combining them, since GL's wrong options often match the result of stopping one step too early.
- Keep your written working visible even on a multiple-choice paper, since it is the fastest way to spot a slip if your answer does not match any option.
- Move on quickly from a question you are stuck on, marking your best guess, and return to it only if time allows at the end.
Worked example
Question 17 of a GL-style multiple-choice maths paper: The mean of five numbers is 14. Four of the numbers are 10, 12, 16 and 18. What is the fifth number? A) 12 B) 14 C) 16 D) 18
- Find the total of all five numbers: since the mean is 14 and there are 5 numbers, the total is 14 x 5 = 70.
- Add the four known numbers: 10 + 12 + 16 + 18 = 56.
- Subtract this from the total to find the fifth number: 70 - 56 = 14.
- Compare to the options: 14 matches option B, so select B.
- Check it is sensible: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 has mean (10 + 12 + 14 + 16 + 18) / 5 = 70 / 5 = 14, which matches.
