Kent Test Style Maths Paper 1
The Kent Test, the 11+ entrance test used for Kent's grammar schools, includes a dedicated maths paper that is sat in standard written-answer format rather than multiple choice, without a calculator, and tests the full range of KS2 maths rather than framing every question inside a numerical-reasoning scenario the way some other regions' papers do. Paper 1 covers the foundation skills the rest of the maths papers build on: number, the four operations applied to whole numbers and decimals, and straightforward one- or two-step word problems.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Read each question once for understanding and once more to check exactly what is being asked before calculating.
- Set out calculations clearly in the space provided, using a column method for larger numbers rather than trying to do them entirely in your head.
- Watch decimal points carefully when adding, subtracting or multiplying decimals, lining up place-value columns correctly.
- For a word problem, decide which operation or operations it needs before writing any numbers down, using key words in the question as a guide.
- Show your working for every question, not just the harder ones, since a small slip is far easier to spot and fix in written-out steps.
- Move through the paper at a steady pace, since it is designed to be completable by a well-prepared pupil within the time allowed if no single question is allowed to overrun.
- If time remains at the end, recheck calculations rather than rereading answers you are already confident in.
Worked example
A shop had 3,254 items of stock. During a sale it sold 1,879 items, and then received a new delivery of 640 items. How many items of stock does the shop have now?
- Start with the original stock: 3,254.
- Subtract the items sold: 3,254 - 1,879 = 1,375.
- Add the new delivery: 1,375 + 640.
- 1,375 + 640 = 2,015, so the shop now has 2,015 items of stock.
